Jan Celliers Match

Our final match.  We were made to feel extremely welcome at Jan Celliers school.  The boys were treated to a beef sausage pre match (tactics, tactics!) and the B's were first off.  It was a match in bare feet (which now the boys actually like) the weather here in Jo'burg was slightly cooler - think British Summer.   1500m above sea level so altitude issues to contend with - the air is thinner and the ball goes further.

As had been the theme on tour, the team started slowly and spent much of the first 10 minutes in their own 22.  Tries were inevitably conceded and we were 10-0 at half time.

However, the second half saw a huge improvement an the last 15 minutes saw the best rugby on tour including a fantastic try by Ed Davies after several phases of play.  The boys can certainly be pleased with their efforts.

A Team L 21-7

As with previous matches on tour, this was ultimately a missed opportunity to gain a win against a previously unbeaten side.  After conceding an early try, the boys raised their game to new heights, tackling ferociously and competing hard for the ball.  Henry Stringer scored a try just before half time and, at 7-7, expectations were high for the second half.  It did not disappoint.

The forwards raised their game to new heights.  The front row of Freddie, Peter & Sammy dominated the set pieces and won five scrums against the head.  The forwards rucked well and the backs, especially Greg, made ground constantly.  A very physical game inevitably resulted in injuries on both sides and also possibly contributed to the individual errors which ultimately cost us the game.  However, the boys should be very proud of their efforts and they will certainly return to the to the UK much improved rugby players.

The Mums' Report

Golly our boys played so well today.  It was extremely exciting to watch.  There was a fabulous atmosphere and lots of support from parents, grandparents, teachers, pupils and even Greg's cousin's partner's sister, Petal, showed up!  Right from the start the boys had energy and put everything into it.
The games had real pace from start to finish and we all felt proud and emotional to watch all the boys play in this way.  Regardless of the score they definitely ended on a high.

After the match we were entertained by a delicious spread of food and drink, then back to the hotel, a quick wash and brush up and out to dinner.
